Do you want to be a Bookkeeper . . . or a BAS Agent?

If the answer is YES you have come to the right place . . .

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia is the only Registered Training Organisation in Australia providing a Total Solution Program for new bookkeepers to become BAS Agents under the Tax Agent Services Regulations 2009.

Under the new regulatory regime, which commenced on 1 March 2010, bookkeepers must be registered BAS Agents, or working under the supervision and control of a BAS Agent or Tax Agent, in order to provide BAS agent services for a fee or to "engage in other conduct connected with providing such services."

In order to register, a bookkeeper must hold a Certificate IV in Bookkeeping, or higher, and have undertaken at least 1,400 hours of relevant experience, working under the direction of a BAS Agent or Tax Agent, in the previous 3 years. Employed work for your own or another business will not necessarily count.

Just obtaining your Cert IV is not enough! If you want to start a contact bookkeeping business you must be able to gain the relevant experience.

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia will not only enable you to obtain the nationally recognised Certificate IV in Bookkeeping but through our strategic partnership with the Australian Bookkeepers Network and with BAS Agent ABN BAS you will also be able to gain the relevant experience you need and to start operating a contract bookkeeping business whenever you feel you are ready. This is achieved by your lodging your clients BAS returns legally through ABN BAS.

That's right, while working with ABN BAS, you will be gaining your 1,400 hours for registration as a BAS Agent in your own right. If you want to know more just click here for more information regarding the ABN BAS option or check out the ABN fact sheet "Quality Assurance Reviews & BAS Lodgement."

As part of the Bookkeeping Institute of Australia's Total Solution Program for new bookkeepers you will not only qualify with a FNS40207 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping but you will also qualify for the FNS30107 Certificate III in Financial Services which is the nationally recognised qualification on which the BIA Bookkeeping Certificate is based.

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia is also the only training provider to offer you the choice of taking our Total Solution Program Certificate IV in Bookkeeping or our more comprehensive BI-580 Start Your Own Bookkeeping Business Program which is designed to help bookkeepers wanting to start their own BAS and Bookkeeping business.

Don't be fooled by other uninformed training organisations into thinking that all you need is a Certificate IV, or that experience working in your own family business or as an employee (other than for a BAS Agent or Tax Agent) will count against the 1,400 hours.

Unless you are a transitional BAS agent the only experience that will count are BAS services performed under the "supervision and control of a tax agent ... or a BAS agent registered under the Act." ABN BAS qualify as such an agent and your experience as a bookkeeper working with them will count.

Experienced Bookkeepers

If you are an established self-employed bookkeeper, running a contract bookkeeping business, and are registered as a transitional BAS agent you will still be required to hold a Certificate IV in Bookkeeping, or higher, in order to apply for  re-registration as a BAS agent on 1 March 2012.

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia recognises that you already know a great deal and that it is unnecessary for you to study every aspect of the course and that that you probably are very familiar with MYOB.

Consequently we have created a fastrack FNS40207 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping only course for experienced bookkeepers which is significantly less expensive than our Total Solution Program for new bookkeepers. You also have the option of only taking the assessments at an even lesser price. Assessment only is less expensive and a better option than RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) which is very demanding in terms of the production of evidence, verification and referees.

And if you are an ABN or a full ICB member (not a student member) you will receive a further $300 discount of the already low price
